Five Furlongs #4 – June 2025
.

After a five month absence, DP8  mustered in, this time at Five Furlongs. The selection was a nod to the needs of Kalli whose medication symptoms compel the Karneses to try to stay close to home at key times. Thus, the first “Kalli Pick” is recorded and may be again as needed.

The visit to Furlongs marked the fourth consecutive year with a visit. A comfortable casual & pleasant dining spot, one can dine in a classic Irish bar, or the covered back deck, or the pavilion/fence side tables as a third choice. A pleasant day compelled us to exploit the natural qualities of the deck under a covering that would shield from the sun, except for the setting sun.

A sizable range of food types will satisfy most diners. Ten appetizers and six soup/salad choices offer a worthy start. Entrées include burgers, a few chicken types, lobster ravioli, salmon, strip steak, shepards pie (unusual spelling), pot pie, and a pasta primavera should satisfy.

The dessert list is minimalist and, in our senior stage of life, the usual dessert people found themselves passing on the opportunity. The idea of ordering dessert first was broached.

Drinks run the usual gamut and our order reflected that.

Service for the whole deck was effected by a single waiter and we admired her service and steady efforts.

The bill, per couple, generally amounted to $50-$75, with higher tabs reflecting more than a couple of drinks. The entrée prices run mid-20s but burgers are mid-upper teens and salads lower-mid teen; beer goes for upper single digits, wine close to $10, and mixed drinks a few dollars more.

We had plenty of news to catch up on since December and Christmas at Karnes. Even with Facebook and the occasional emails, nothing feels as good as dining with friends.

We are looking forward to a rare DP10 next with a visit from the Adamses in July.
